I am pretty sure you can purchase a reproduction Muncie handle that is already made to fit the Hurst shifter mechanism. You won't ruin your original handle and is less expensive then rechroming the one you cut and weld. They make them for the Chevelle so likely made for the Camaro as well.

I have done this conversion for a few shifters...pretty simple. Weld the Hurst end on the Muncie handle...once it is in the boot, you can't tell. As for not ruining a Muncie handle, they make a number of aftermarket pieces that will work. For the Nova, the Chevelle handle is close...the average car guy won't know the difference.
