extended BBC oil pans, or did racers have the stock GM pans cut and welded up for more oil
quantity? I'm talking about late 60's early 70's time periods. Thanks in advance! Ted |

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe the 68 COPO Nova came with an extended oil pan and were factory installed from what I recall. It had a cut and welded extension on the pan.

Regarding factory welded GM oil pans for the Mark IV Big Block Chevy, yes, they were manufactured for sale by GM with a GM part # 3879633 with a oil pan windage tray #3879640 in their performance parts/off road catalog back in the day ( 1960's ). I do know that the upper part of the pan resembles an early Impala (B-body) oil pan for the 396-427 engines but I do not know where the lower welded sump came from and if GM manufactured the pans themselves or had some other oil pan manufacturer weld them up for GM. I have a pan with the extended sump, but it must've been a 'home-made" unit. The one in Rick Nelson's photo looks great. Mine kinda appears 'ratty'.

Chevy also made a deep sump pan for the 409, listed in the Heavy Duty parts section. The added sump looked very crude like someone made in auto shop.

hi
my original 55 nomad gasser had an extended oil pan on it when drag racing back in the day with cooling tubes through it, but was rusted out on the bottom so we fabricated another to the same dimension and it is on my gasser now holds 10 quarts, but ensure you extend the oil pickup for the pump i also ensured i use a HD high volume pump rather than stock configuration thought you might be interested thx chris
