The other end should be wound like a coil spring and with something like 4 or 5 coils if I recall. You will have to "wind" this end over of the cable. Make sure it is in front of the crimped on cable stop (towards to the front of the car). I believe this helps in returning the pedal but I am not positive on that. To my knowledge the spring is independent of the bracket and does not go through it.
