Default Re: ZL1/L88 198 intake, NOS 074 heads

Is it possible when they were cast the date was installed backwards? 81170? Are there other examples or are they all the same code. This could indicate that a particular casting run the date was mistakenly setup wrong, just a thought.

I could see that . You never know what kind of mistakes they made from factory. Not everything came out the way it should have. I am wondering if they were only cast like this in 1968. Have not seen any other 1968 "042" heads and the build date of the engine is august 19, 1968 so it could deffinately be july 11, 1968. Would just like to make sure before I reinstall heads on original block. The owner believes they are original heads but they are on a LU suffix block whick is 435hp, tri power, heavy duty clutch 4spd. And to my understanding, they only used 042 heads on l88 and zl1 engines. He also has an original ZL1 engine and it has the 042 heads dated 2.2.69 which are the original heads.

correct me if I am wrong, but all ZL-1s came with 074 heads I believe. Sorry for my ignorance, but what is an 042 head?

I think he means "842" heads...this was the second design big block aluminum head produced...it was never used on the ZL-1.

For further info on big block aluminum heads and their proper use please see kwhizz

I was just wondering if these 074 heads were possibly a service replacement or over the counter sale. I just have not seen a date cast like this in any set of 074 heads I have seen. Almost all the ones I have seen have been 69. Have not seen a 68 set yet and thats what got me wondering if they maybe just cast the date in 1968 built heads differently.

Well finally found out, He had given me the wrong heads. This engine does run an 842 head, not an 074. Thanks for the input everyone!!
