Conducted the procedure this weekend. Mikey didn't steer me wrong. Dry-ice worked like a charm and the original gas cap has been mated back with the cap receiver. Thanks for all of your input. I feel much better now!

P.S. the notion of an exploding gas tank made me think of the tank as a rocket ship, so I made a launch pad!




You can see the dry ice doing its thing here. By the time i was done the project and ready to mount the tank back on the Nova all of the dry ice had disappeared with no residue.
