Sam, that's what I thought. Usually..... the cause for that situation is becuause the cap ring is for an EEC tank which used a different (non-vented) cap. The depth of the cap ring lip is different to prevent the inadvertent use of the wrong cap - and thereby potentially sucking in the tank! My advice (albeit unsolicited!) is to use a Quanta tank! A little pricey, but..... [/ QUOTE ] Marlin - the Spectrum tank looks real nice. Mikey promises me even a doofus like me can unsolder the old cap receiver and put the correct one back on. I had a tank with a small hole punched in the bottom once, and soldered a penny on to the hole.
That's the short version. The long version cost me some eyebrows. Seems the metal actually absorbs a bit of petrol over the years. I completely emptied the tank. Let it sit for a day. Ran a garden hose in it until it overflowed for about 5 min. Emptied the water. Let it set til the afternoon. Set the tank up on a work bench, cleaned the spot really well, went to solder the penny on, and as soon as I hit the hole with an open flame.... BOOM. Of course, I was standing right over the hole for the sending unit. Fortunately, it only slightly balloned the tank.

Sam has requested the neck from the old tamk. I cut it out yesterday and will send ASAP. After that, I am not responsible.

The Hippie makes sense since Quanta only sells Spectra,(Not Spectrum),Premium gas tanks so buying one from them won't resolve your problem.
Quanta Part# GM 46-D 1970 Nova Gas tank w/o EEC for $189 + ship...includes filler neck. |

Conducted the procedure this weekend. Mikey didn't steer me wrong. Dry-ice worked like a charm and the original gas cap has been mated back with the cap receiver. Thanks for all of your input.
![]() ![]() P.S. the notion of an exploding gas tank made me think of the tank as a rocket ship, so I made a launch pad! ![]() ![]() You can see the dry ice doing its thing here. By the time i was done the project and ready to mount the tank back on the Nova all of the dry ice had disappeared with no residue. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
