The confusion was probably at the assembly plant. A friend knows of at least one early L78 that received a blacked out tail pan sometime after the bumper was on and trunk weather strip installed.

Amount of sheen on the rear panel blackout varied, due to many factors. It’s the same paint as the rockers.

At least for 1968 it was “supposed to be” 30 percent...

Rockers were hand masked and there will be some variation from car to car. Rockers are not and never have been gloss. :)

Yes the R for carb on that L72 POP is an error. Errors like that on POPs are fairly rare.
