As I'm not a 70 Chevelle expert, could someone elaborate on my questions....1)The EBAY 70 Chevelle in above link appears to have a COWL hood.......I thought that the NON-COWL LS-6's got the Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner and the COWL hood cars got the Cowl Induction set-up......2) Did 70 L-78 Chevelles have Cowl Induction Hoods as an option AND Flat Hoods standard with the Dual Snorkel OR maybe prior to January 1970 L-78 Chevelles had an OPEN element Air Cleaner.....Chuck S / Seattle

The Chevelle in the ad does have a Cowl Induction hood (technically) but, the hood is not the style that has the vacuum operated flap at the back. I think those hoods with the flap came with the sealed air cleaner while the hoods without either came with the dual snorkel or an open element air cleaner.

"Frame-off Total Restoration......
Totally Original...... Absolutely Nothing Wrong with this Chevelle......" Uh, not exactly! Chuck, The SS option included the "Special Domed Hood" but the "Cowl Induction" option featured the vacuum actuated flapper and air cleaner that sealed to the bottom of the hood. These features applied to the L-78 cars as well as the earlier LS-6 cars. Non Cowl Induction L-78s and early LS-6s received the open element air cleaner. The later Non CI LS-6s received the dual snorkle. Mr. Nelson or Mr. Peters can fill you in on the dates all these changes took place, as well as Greg Carlson; all much more knowledgable than I! Just to follow up on what Dennis already stated..
The 1970 Chevelle SS, whether a "396" or "454" came standard with the "domed" hood. This is basically a cowl induction hood without the flapper. When the car WAS NOT ordered with Cowl Induction the air cleaner could either be the 14" open element air clearner or the dual snorkle unit. The following applied though: 1) SS396 RPO L34...14" open element if no CI 2) SS396 RPO L78...(L78 was canceled very early Dec. '69) either 14" open element or dual snorkle if no CI 3) SS454 RPO LS5...14" open element if no CI 4) SS454 RPO LS6...14" open element or dual snorkle if no CI. In my opinion the 14" open element and the dual snorkle were used at the same time. There doesn't seem to be any definite time frame for the indroduction of one and the discontinuing of the other. It wasn't a "plant specific" item, either. I've heard of the dual snorkle unit being a "afterthought" to noise laws, but I really don't buy into this as 14" open element aircleaners were used on all SHP motors up to that point with no apparent problems. If Cowl Induction was checked off (irregardless of engine) the aircleaner is the single snorkle base with the seal. The hood will then be the "domed hood" with flapper. Hope this helps. Dennis thanks for the plug...Happy Holidays.. |

To be totally original, shouldn't this car have the A.I.R. setup?

Yes, the car should have the A.I.R. setup (smog system), as should all SHP Chevelles in 1970.

To be totally original, shouldn't this car have the A.I.R. setup? [/ QUOTE ] So how can it be 'Totally Original' if it's had a 'Total Frame-off Restoration'? And "Absolutely nothing wrong with this Chevelle" is a bit of a stretch! Probably a very nice car but the description is misleading to us anal purists.

Greg......Are you sure the dual snorkle air cleaner was available on 70 L78 Chevelles? I always thought the dual snorkle was released later in the production year, after the L78 had been cancelled. Wasn't that air cleaner more common on L78 70 Camaros and Mid 70 LS6 cars, which were built well after the L78 Chevelle had been discontinued? What is the earliest build date 70 SS Chevelle with a dual snorkle air cleaner that can be documented by the build sheet?......Kevin
