Default Not exactly a muscle car

Hoping someone can help; my neighbor bought a 1951 (I think) Studebaker Champion last year. It needs some minor work but, since he is retired, the car is something keeping him occupied.

One thing that is driving him crazy is the original one barrel Carter carb. He has problems with this thing from day one. He's taken that carb off the car at least three times; having it cleaned and rebuilt (he is not a mechanic). The main problem with the car is it least fuel. He told me that he got a rebuild kit for the carburetor but he thinks the kit was wrong because one of the pieces that controls the float appears to be too small.

The carburetor is a Carter one barrel. He tells me that the model number is we-715s, I also see another number 146-68 on the carburetor.

If anyone is familiar with these cars / carburetors and their common problems I would really appreciate your help. My friend wants to be able to drive his collector car this summer without having to worry about being stuck on the road.

Thank you

That's for the info Rob. I am forwarding those contacts to my neighbor; hopefully someone can help him. I know it is driving him crazy.

I rebuilt the Carter one barrel on my 49 Studebaker truck. Really simple carbs.
I doubt it is the same carb on a 51 Champion, as there were two different six cylinder engines used back then and the Champion would have the smaller engine.

I have since swapped out the flat head six for an SBC.

I have the service manual for the truck, and I believe it covers both engines. Would be glad to scan and send pages covering the small motor carb for 1949; but guessing all that is available on line.

Lynn,

That scan of the carburetor section would be a help. Anything that might help my neighbor fix his problem is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave
