Hi everyone I've been a car painter for 56 years..I restoring my '69 Z/28 Camaro..The car will be painted in the original Rallye Green with white stripes..The many I've painted in the past where lacquer jobs as the following issue was never a concern..I've also shot the base color, taped off the stripes and clearcoated over the two (car color and stripe color) at the same time..However I believe that process will be a deduction for the "Legends" review/judging..
I will use a basecoat/clearcoat process..Per the Legends book 25 pts will be deducted if the stripes are clearcoated over at the same time as the base color is cleared..So what is correct way? Basecoat/clearcoat the color which is a two- stage process..Then apply a single stage stripe color..Or use a two-stage stripe color basecoat (white in my case) then clearcoat over? Therefore the stripes edges would be sharp and easily felt vs smoothed over if clearcoated green base and stripes are sprayed at the same time, thus kind of smoothing the sharp stripe edges? Any thoughts? |

I'd like to follow this also. IMO, the single stage white applied over B/C would be too thick, but probably the best you can hope for. Mil thickness of modern urethanes is greater than the leaded lacquers original to the car. So that "lip" wouldn't be quite right.

Here is a thread where we went thru this topic on a paint forum. The pros gave me some pointers. Like you I want the stripes on top. Here is a mock-up I did and think it will work out good on my car. Single stage white over bc/cc. I used Utech 350 for the white. It covered well without having to layer it on thick.

I grappled with this on my 67 Z. Jerry M has posted on other forums the stripes should always be single stage then lightly sanded to take any sharp edge off. The painter where I had my car done was not too enthused when I specified what I wanted. He wanted to clear over the stripes and showed me a second gen Z they had done. I didn't like the look. In the end, he did single stage for me but refused to sand them as he claimed the paint rep told him to not do it. I asked why but never got a reason. The stripes came out great and our guy who will do final cut and buff said he'll take care of it.

I ran into a Bunch of resistance from My Painter re stripes on top of BC/CC. They would NOT compromise and accept my request. I was certainly not going to move my car from my selected quality Painter & I had seen 'Other' "Z-stripes" car from them and understood my 'Judging' compromise. I guess I will take the deduction.
