Grand Sport Corvette- The Myth & Legend
Here's fantastic but brief summary of their racing history. Unfortunately, never competed under the factory or homologated and therefore never competed as designed. Duntov had a brilliant plan, which unfortunately was shut down before implemented by GM's self-imposed factory racing ban.
It's amazing all 5 cars have survived.... These were the ultimate factory race cars, but never meant to be....

----Thanks, Steve! Brings back a lot of good memories. I was 17 the 1st time I ever went to Sebring in 1964. I was invited by a good friend whos older sister was dating the head pit steward. We had use of a trailer at the course along the backstretch just before the start-finish line straight. It was fully stocked with beer and food for the whole weekend, and we could walk about 100 feet to the start-finish. There was one Grand Sport coupe out of the three in the race (I believe it was the one AJ was in) and we got great views from the roof of the trailer of it coming down the backstretch into the hair-pin corner and then back up the start-finish. In my memory he seemed to be going 150mph or more and had to start braking just past where we were. He'd lumber thru that hair-pin and then explode up the start-finish straight. He would pass all the smaller, slower stuff (MGs, Austin Healeys, etc) down the back-stretch and then in the hairpin a couple would pass him. Then he would make mince meat out of them all over again. The left hand front tire was generally off the ground all the way thru that hair-pin curve. What a weekend for a 17 year old kid!!!! I have other great memories of that race but not pertinent to the GS's so much. I may expound on those a bit later. Hope you guys enjoy my rambling....Bill S

Wow, those are great photos. Those cars evolved so much you'd think they made 50 of them from the pictures. I love the shots at Road America.

----Back in 1964 The drivers (of course) still ran across at the start. I was checking out all the different pits and honed in on the closest one to our trailer, and our supply of beer. I recognised the Yenko sign from adds and stories in magazines and kind of tried to look insignificant and hang out there about ten minutes before the start. Being 17 years old I quickly noticed a beautiful blond babe right in the middle of all the action. I kind of sidled up closer and the start was iminent. She turned around and noticed me (the only one there doing nothing) and asked me to hold her up on the wall so she could watch the start. There I am in the Yenko pit holding a woman in a pink outfit at the Sebring 12 hr. Had no idea who she was until it hit me several years later! And you all know who it was....Bill S
