Oil Filter Pre-Screen...

Just saw this part for the first time on another car site...is it just a gizmo or something to consider using ???

I don't know of any reason to use it unless you want to see if any large pieces are floating around in your engine. I always cut my filters apart and inspect them anyway, so it wouldn't do anything for me.

Agree, would this restrict oil flow some? Best oil filters on the market today are Motorcraft, Bosch, Purolator. BEST engine oil tested by an engineer, Quaker State 10W30 Full Synthetic oil. RAT540 blog is where you will find all his results what filters and oils he has tested. This engineer backs up his tests with proof.

They do work but they're not intended for long-term use. I've used them a couple of times on fresh builds to facilitate post break-in inspection.



If you do install one, you need to watch oil pressure like a hawk--if it starts to drop excessively it needs to be shut down immediately as debris may be clogging the screen--and since there's no form of bypass, if it gets clogged the engine gets zero oil.

My guess would be that if the screen is clogged enough to cause oil pressure to drop you have something serious wrong anyway.

It's amazing how much fine lint and tiny particles of foreign material remain on/in parts even after repeated deep scrubbings, not to mention normal break-in flotsam and jetsam and minuscule slivers of silicone sealant, etc. Run one of those pre-screens and you'll see every bit of it lodged in the screen and damn near nothing in the oil filter itself--other than perhaps moly residue.
