Default 1971 T/A original muncie bellhousing shifter knob

1971 Trans Am was totaled about 30 years ago, and that is all there is left of it. Original 581 bellhousing, M20 Muncie with T/As vin on it, original Hurst shifter and knob. Here are the numbers:

Main case: 3925661
Tailhousing: 3978764
side cover: 3952648
TAG on side cover: 981709 WT
Muncie date code: P1T18A
VIN on transmission: 21N112838

Bellhousing: 9785581

Shifter body: 3138
1-2 lever: 5615
3-4 lever: 5615
reverse lever: 5616
1-2 rod: 5617
3-4 rod: 5619
reverse rod: 5621
lever: I'm assuming 7244 but I haven't removed it.
Original Pontiac 4-speed shifter knob.

As for condition, it is dirty, I have to take original owner's word that is was working fine when car was totaled. He told me that he once took it out to replace the clutch and throw-out bearing, and that at the same time he replaced the bearings in the transmission. That is all I know. Pics to come.

$1125 for everything listed above.

FYI, in 1971 and 1972 the only four-speed available in the Trans Am (which only came with a 455HO) was the M22. So, if it's the original trans from a 71 T/A and judging by the VIN, it is, that would be an M22 not an M20. Just thought you might like to know. "Muncie date code: P1T18A"

Interesting. the date code should have a "C" at the end. Not an "A"

Dec 18 1971 date code.

That trans is out of a firebird or formula. Not out of a trans am. Tag would say WO

I'm back from checking and sure enough, I put it in first gear and checked the first gear ratio and I need to turn the input shaft 2.5 turns to get the output to turn 1 turn, so that is definitely a M20, and so the A code says on it. So you guys are right, it's out of a Firebird or a Formula. Sorry for the inconvenience. It's quite a coincidence the guy had a 71 Trans Am and the tranny was at one point replaced with a Muncie from another 71 F body. So many things can happen in so many years.

sorry again for the confusion. Mods feel free to change the title accordingly.

Frank.

Mystery solved! Thanks guys. If someone had money to spare, they could always run that VIN through PHS and get the broadcast sheet to get the definitive answer on what it came from.
