I was not sure where to post this, move it if need be.
Can anyone tell me what type cars this BB Chevy oil pan was original installed on? I have seen a few of these pans just like this. I think it is a factory pan and the factory windage tray can be run in these pans also. I have some ideas and just trying to check them out. Thank Nelson ![]() |

That's the one from the GM HD parts book, never installed on a car. Takes special oil pump too.

Nelson your pan is a 6 quart factory oil pan they used on the 67 Corvette L-88 engine. I have two of these, a rare pan for sure. I have the special pickup tube and screen that fits this pan. The part number is 3879633, tray baffle 3879640, and pump is 3964255, the pump has a deep pickup to match the pan. These are old parts numbers that are not in use any more. My plans are to put my oil pan on my 69 Camaro BB Drag car, i believe it will fit, will check to make sure though when i make the change. Its 8 inch deep sump. The windage tray was a semi circular piece, very hard to find one of these, i do have one but using it on my current BB Drag engine. You can use the ZL-1 style pump but will have to find a pickup tube to fit for correct height.

The pan in the picture above is the 69-72 396-454 Camaro Chevelle Nova style oil pan with the stair step levels to clear the subframe.
Some backyard mechanic welded on a deeper base. GM did not sell crap like that with a welded seam and sell it as a special 6 qt oil pan The below pic shows the correct sytle pan used on BB Corvettes - This is a service replacement pan but still shows the type of oil pan used on BB Corvettes USER3965175 ![]() |

Sorry USER you need to do your research. Chevy did make these pans, dont believe me go out and buy How to Hot Rod Big Block Chevys. All the info is in this book, the pics of this pan and windage tray they used too and part numbers. i have the book. Yes Chevy did make this pan. Did you ever hear of Joel Rosen, Motion Performance. The 67 Corvette L-88 Race Engine used this pan, a 6 quart with semi- circular baffle tray. Nelson this is a original High Perf Chevy BB pan. Grump Jenkins used these pans from what the book says and pics they show.

USER,
It is definitely a GM pan. It is a rare piece but not that rare. It will definitely fit Camaro and Nova. My 69 Harrell Camaro had one and I believe Kim Howie's Gibb Nova had one as well. I have also seen them on many others. |

I believe all the COPO Novas had this pan. There was a discussion on it some time ago but I cannot find it.

Rick, From what I can tell, none of the novas came with the pan from the factory. But a lot of the 396 were blew up early in life. Fred Gibb had all the cars still in stock and any other cars that came in for warr. work were converted to this pan. This info I got from one of the guys that worked for Fred.

Years ago Oshawa stamping made the small block oil pans. They eventually developed a method, along with open molecule steel, to draw the shape of the pan in a single draw. It was a two step process before. A short deep sump like that would be impossible to draw, period. The longer sump would be easier to do. I have one of these pans and the oil pump but just never had a project to use it on.
