The workers would spend months peeling the paint off of the hooks. They would roll the paint up in balls and while keeping it in the pants pocket polish it with finger action then add more layers of paint until they had a piece they were happy with.

Ear rings and Pendants were popular. This pendant has all the colors from model year 1963. Source: Chevrolet Final Assembly-Norwood Ohio

James, the Z is still available as a reference resource whenever the need arises.

Got my 10 10 Z painted. Getting ready to stripe it... I think.

Always thought the space between the large stripe and the small stripe was 1/4 inch. Also thought the outer stripe was 1/4.

Looked at my old notes from before I sanded off the rear deck lid and my notes say both the space and the outer stripe were 9/32.

Looked at my original never painted cowl vent panel (pics posted on page one) and it looks like the space is 9/32.
The outer stripe is closer to 5/16.

I placed a piece of 1/4 inch tape in the space, and it clearly does not cover completely. Even more gaps on the outer stripe.

Here is my problem: I don't think anyone sells 9/32 fine line tape. What are you guys laying out stripes with?

Thanks for any help.

Just for fun attached a pic of my wife's reflection in the hood. Spent a lot of time getting this thing really straight in preparation for the black paint. That reflection is in uncut unpolished black lacquer. Should shine up pretty nicely.

i believe the best way to get the stripes correct is using the stencil and stripe kit - exact to the factory!

Lynn
I looked at Eddies stripe kit last year and I think it included the correct width tape, I just do not remember.
However, I have done a couple 69 stripes and I being the cheap ass that I am I laid them out by hand. I made some tracings off OE cars. On OE paint cars I do believe the outside stripe is .250" and the inside body color on is close ot 9/32" as seen on original cars.
As far as the tape for the 9/32 stripe. I used 3/16 and 3/32 butted together and then covered the seam with a piece of 1/8.
Here is a picture I jacked from Team Camaro.
Good luck
Mike

Yeah, I figured out the stencil kit was the way to go. That is why I said nevermind.

Anyway, I have a stencil kit around her somewhere. Need to decide if I am following the way GM
TRIED to do it on my car, or if I want to go the way they actually DID do it.

There were some things the factory did that I just couldn't bring myself to replicate.

Because my car is black, I re-leaded the seams between the roof and quarters.
Looked like a scene from a surfer movie before I started.

Also, the bottom half inch of the tail panel had no topcoat.
Both doors were twisted and the bottom rear stuck out from the rocker.

So, need to decide how much to replicate the sloppy assy on the stripes.

Thanks for the help guys.

----The stencil guy in Chicago (Chris Ps old partner) definetly has stencils that clearly do the corners correctly along with everything other measurement. Ive bought several sets and they were great. They still allowed for personal adjustments like overspray here and there, if you want that.......Bill S
