Z28 Stripes - 69

Does anyone know what the factory process was for painting the Z28 camaro stripes. Some questions on my mind are...

Did they paint the panels off the car?
If they were on the car - was the fnt grill in place?
How was the cowl painted?

I'm trying to duplicate the overspray aspects and am curious of the process etc.

Ed,
I think the CRG report is incorrect on the dash/rear package tray blackout sequence. The top cowl area was painted stripe color in the areas that would be visible through the cowl panel prior to dash/rear package tray black paint.
The cowl panel looks to be striped off the car, with stripe color overspray frequently coming through the windshield squirter holes. The decklid/spoiler were striped together with a horizontal tape at the rear lower edge of the spoiler.
The hood/header panel were striped with a variety of sloppy wrap around edges. I don't think the grille was in place because the stripes look clean going under the header panel/behind the grille.

Ill post a few pics of my cowl panel and header panel later today to see what we think?

I appreciate the thoughts

Chevy did the front stripes; Fisher did the rear. That required the front sheetmetal to be in position. I have seen Z/28s with stripe color overspray on the grille reinforcement so the grille must have been installed.

There should never be any stripe color overspray on the washer nozzles or wiper linkage.

The grille stiffener was certainly painted separately, you can see clamp lines and drips in the original paint on the stiffeners typically and the screws are not painted. My blue rs has very little blue on the top of the grille but the stiffener is completely blue. The stripe tape lines are very clean going under the header panel behind the grille. With the rs headlight squirters/hardware and other items that were installed after the grille was painted it should have been separate from the front end for ease of assembly later I would think.

The stiffener was painted body color off the car [it may have been on the grille] but was in place when the stripes were done. My 1st orange car was OE paint and there was a very slight mist of white paint on both sides. They just didn't quite tape it off properly.

Was the wiper linkage black on all the cars? My car is black with white stripes, so I don't know about the other colors. I am assuming yes, because mine was painted before the ends were riveted on, and the paint doesn't look like the full gloss paint.

I will always defer to William on restoration practices, but... my wiper linkage has white over spray from the Z/28 stripes. Car was an original paint car, but we got it in 1975, so some things could have happened before then, like a touch up on one of the stripes.

I always thought the wiper linkage would look better all black and have debated whether to go that way or duplicate what I always thought was the factory white overspray.

On another note, I have seen a lot of discrepancies on stripe taping and placement. I am attaching some pics of my original cowl vent, which I believe is still original paint. Also included a pic of my wiper linkage with the white overspray. If you look at the tape job on the cowl vent, you will see the taper followed the contour very well up the sides of the vents, but missed pretty badly on the rear.

The cowl vent panel was painted & striped off the car as per the CRG Assembly Process. Note the white over spray on the underside at front of the panel, impossible if were painted on the car.

The wiper linkage overspray could have occurred during final assembly at Chevy or as you stated during a repair.

Here are the pics of my cowl panel and the header panel - special note below

...related to the original stripes, we already painted the top surfaces so the orig stripes are not
visible.....but the overspray is - we kept that to determine how the paint was applied to the stripes.
