To me the A and B on 499s are the real tell tale sign. You will always see a faint A and an almost invisible B on the 9B12s If you look at both the 9A15s above the A is less pronounced than the rest of the characters in each unit ,even though one is harder struck than the other. Also note the number 9 being lower in the date versus the 1 in the date and the crooked A in each, and the 5 being slightly lower than the 1.

Check for the correct "step" where the cap seats (above the stamp). The diameter looks like it has been turned down & the repeat of the lathe marks (wider and narrower grooves) is too perfect. The re-stampers are getting really good characters these days!

on the first dist. there ae 4 wider grooves..is that typical? dont see them on the second unit...and I would think that is very hard to reproduce correctly... I'll have to dig out the real 499 Ive had for years and take a look..

Here one with deep stamping, very pronounced ribbing, and the tool marks from being hit so hard. I wasn't asking if it is real in my original post because I KNOW its real , im just asking if there were anyone with a deeply stamped 499 ....A member here owns the copo this came out of decades ago.

I think that you're doing the right thing asking if anyone has ever seen a deep stamp or repeated grove pattern with that date. It really has 2 characteristics not to like. pretty sure that they are roll stamped. Heavy stamp without the gang imprint would also be odd.
