Plus, the 4's and the 9's in the part number don't look the same shape as other known 499's.

"Plus, the 4's and the 9's in the part number don't look the same shape as other known 499's"

Probably due to the stamping being deeper than most. Person that owns it had it for 28 years.

It is real....look at everyone out there that is supposedly real... Look at the "4" with the dots in each corner of the upper triangle. Trust me. It's real plus it's a known date It's not mine and I don't know the owner

Is the varying starting point of the first '1' away from the step in the dist body (as visible in the above 2 pictures) typical, even between units assembled on the same date?

looks like a typical service piece to me...but i am no expert..i just observe

they are batch stamped on the more rare, low production distribs..you can see the witness marks on the deeply stamped piece from the gang stamp tool, and that deep you would expect to see them..since they where stamped by hand no 2 would be identical..

and ive seen that exact witness mark many times on buick olds and pontiac more rare and low production parts like stage1 ram air and w30 pieces,,and there are known dates

during early production, like the beginning of the year..you see more "perfect" stamps but during the run GM had no idea during production how many they would need for the line and service combined so a periodic batch of x-many would be produced

ive seen it on more than a few distribs and carbs

the olds guys have figured out the diameter of an orig to compare anything in question..since 4 speed w30 pieces bring so much,,

you could mic the known,if the one in question is smaller, then it could support the idea its been turned and stamped
