I have a 692 pump with a really rough casting in the date code area, making the code difficult to read. It is definitely in need of a total rebuild, but I think it is salvageable. What are these pumps selling for these days (cores)?

Personally, I think the 4-core is overkill. The heat rejection from the engine would not be significantly different than a stock engine. Definitely not more than a Z.
Why a hi flow impeller?
186 heads on a HB motor? Interesting.

I find that interesting too Kurt. #186 heads on a '69 HB 350? I thought both the HA and the HB coded 350's only came with #041's (casting symbol was a right scalene triangle). Just saying.

I currently own a 1969 Camaro SS350. Although the original drivetrain is long gone, this 4/speed car has a March '69 HC coded block with #041 heads. The transmission is an M20 Muncie #660 case and the rearend is a BS coded 12 bolt posi. Built in Van Nuys.

Sal,

The CRG has an associate member named Alan Colvin who wrote the series &quot;Chevrolet by the numbers&quot; If you have the 1965-1969 copy look at page 102 for usage applications with head 3927186.

It was made with both 1.94/150 or 2.02/160. Lower horse applications like my car got the 1.94/150 from the factory.

According to my builder this engine will make a estimated 380 (Gross HP) and I am also cooling a TH-350 to boot. I would rather run cool all the time -especially if the car is used in local parades which I plan to do in the future with it. [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif[/img]

I think I've seen 2 other L48's, out of hundreds, with 186 heads.
They are original to the car?

The small block cooling system is well designed. With that rad, I'd go with the stock impeller. More flow is not a good thing - cavitation and other problems. The thermostat is still the restriction in the system. Removing the thermostat increases the flow, but that doesn't turn out well.

btw, making hp doesn't mean you'll have more heat rejection. If the engine is efficient, you could have less.

Original heads. Radiator builder suggested a high flow impeller. You think a standard impeller would do the job - that would be fine with me. I will ask The pump rebuilder to see what they say and report back [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif[/img]

Hey 70 COPO

Have you considered running the L-46 camshaft out of the Corvette? Over on the NCRS.org board Duke Williams has written extensively about this. There are several threads about this. Duke has written in detail about what head massaging to do with this camshaft to make meaningful torque and horsepower. Duke is extremely knowledgable about sbc engines. I believed he raced a 63 fuelie back in the day. He is an old timer for sure. It may be worth your time to check this out.

I own a L-79 in my 67 Vette and love the engine but given you have a 350 it may be worth reading. JMO.

Phil, just a little food for thought. My BBC motor is around 450hp and I'm running a stock pump/impeller that was, like I said earlier, rebuilt by Arthur Gould. I go to car shows (lots of idle time, get groceries and run the drag strip and it never overheats.

In other words, just have your w/p rebuilt to stock specs and make sure your radiator is good and you won't have any issues.
