Scot, #15501225 was discontinued 8-88.The first part number was #8873297 that was replaced by #799395 on 11-76.Then #799395 was repl by #11501225.All of the numbers lead to a dead end and I cannot find any of these numbers in any of my old books.

I can't get any farther then you did..
Dead as a door nail with no past application history either.
All I can add is 1966-67 Chevy II's used ashtray #3875053.

Thanks Kendall & Rick! I really appreciate your time and effort to look it up. I'm a lot closer with the information you came up with and hopefully in time can track it down.

The metal area that gets painted dash color is flat on the NOS unit but the 66-67 Nova trays are curved at the bottom.

Found ashtray #8873297 listed in an old 1974 GMC/Chevrolet truck parts catalog for $1.65. for Cargo Van & series 10-30 trucks.
It looks like your #15501225 superceded that original assembly line part many years later.
