I would think that part of the reason that the kinks/ridges are there is to add structural support...sort of like corrugated pipe...

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

Yesterday, I picked up the replacement floor pan for my Camaro and I have not compared the pan side by side to the original but...it looks like it has those two "kinks" in the exact same place!

I believe the kinks you see are actually "gathers" caused by the stamping process. You notice them even more in nova tunnels where the excess metal is squeezed together,(gathered)into an untidy bunch, or ridge, or even stretched.
Areas that are not critical to exterior appearence are usually left this way in the stamping process. GM wasn't going to spend money on a dead smooth floor back then for something that no one was going to see. I base this 30 years of manufacturing experience, mostly in welding, but a few months in the stamping department.

They put those there because when you go really really fast the body of the car stretches and becomes streamlined... It was first noticed on 68 Big block Novas which of course are really really fast...... Folks in the Aircraft industry saw this and designed the Concord shortly after that.....
