Default Driving through or around Chicago

I am doing a driving trip to the Olds Nationals in Detroit at the end of July. My route will have me passing Chicago on Monday July 26th. I have driven the route before and always went through on a Sunday morning, but my schedule this year means it has to be on the Monday. Any suggestings on what the best route is? I will be coming from Davenport IA. My map software says I-80. I do not see an alternate southern route. Any suggestions from the locals?

i believe I 80 might be your only option from davenport,if you try and go north , it will take you right back to I 80 and that road is terrible at any time of the day
tune your radio to AM 780 and listen for a traffic report on the 8's. and if there is an accident......expect to sit.

Watch out for delays around the I94 and I65 junction if you think about taking that route. There is extreme construction going on there. I sat for 1/2 hour early Sunday morning while they put another bridge beam across I94. Good thing Peotone sucked, I guess I didn't miss anything by not being there at the opening bell.

Are you referring to the I 80 stretch between I 94 interchange and I 65 Interchange? I drove through there in 91 ,97, 98 and again in 2002. It was under construction then.

Paul,

HEADS UP

Date: Wed, 21 May 2008 10:32:48 -0500

All Illinois drivers or those visiting there.

Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones starting in July.
Beginning in July the State of Illinois will use speed cameras in areas designated as 'Work Zones' on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a

$375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense, but the SECOND offense will cost $ 1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension.

Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license , which allows insurance companies to raise their rates.

This represents the harshest penalty structure yet for a city or state using PHOTO enforcements. The State will begin with TWO camera vans issuing tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH.

Photographs of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken.

Pass this on to everyone you know.

No, I was on I 94 itself. I 65 is closed where it would normally meet with I 94. I just thought you should know about that construction too.

Just drove that I-80 route over Memorial Day weekend from Des Moines, IA to northern Ohio. Traveled through the I-80 / I-65 area about 1PM on Thursday with some slowdown but no stopped traffic and returned back through that area early Sunday morning around 8AM with no problem.

Right now both Converts are ready to go,but I am just planning on taking one. I have been in contact with the original owner of the 66 who now lives north of Davenport and plan to meet with him on my way through. The decision to take the 66 will be last minute if I can set something up with the original owner.
