Snopes says that there is no proof that the story ever happened as written. Therefore, I guess that was the reason it wasn't covered by the media. It didn't happen (as written), therefore the media didn't cover it. It has to happen before the media can either cover it or ignore it.

If it didn't happen, the media can neither cover it nor choose to ignore it.
