Tom, on page #306 of the 1970 Nova assembly manual it shows the negative battery cable ground being bolted to the passengers side front of the block rather than to the alt. bracket. This shows it for the V8 396 engines.. But on page #307 it shows this cable being bolted to the alt. bracket also for the v8 396 motors. Like I said I remembered it being shown both ways. I have seen it both ways on restored cars.. I guess either way is correct..
