Here's a picture from Wayne's site of the HD disc brake rear. You can see there is no taper to the rear axle tube. The HD rear used bigger axles and bigger bearings which were more reliable when racing.
 Here's a tapered JL8 rear with the brakes missing.  And another picture of the HD service package rear.
