The cowl tag should have: ST 68-13880, that would be for an SS Elcamino. The numbers you posted after ST don't make sense.
The engine code is wrong to be the original for it. The cowl tag showed a build of 09D (4th week of September), yet the motor is stamped T0407IV. That means it was assembled April 7th for an Impala. You'll have to find the casting date on the side of the block to see what year. As you know, it should have a 12-bolt rear. What does the VIN plate say? |

Guys, thanks for the help, the cowl tag is st 68-138830. Now you have me wondering if I put that last 3 in the number. Being an insurance guy I take pictures of 1000's of vin plates a year and have the equiptment to do it, Should have brought a camera, live and learn.
Other numbers on the cowl tag are TR 765 B7"0" (or D?) 09D 016117250452 VV paint I was there for an hour, it was cold and cramped, should have brought a camara, had a flashlight I don't know were the vin tag is, probabley somewhere under the dash? I was already doing YOGA to get around the crap in the garage. I do not know these cars at all, I had no idea that it should have a 12 bolt rear end, I'm assuming that a 12 bolt has 12 bolts on the rear cover? Any idea what the rear end that is in it is? Good to know the motor isn't original. Guy selling thought it was the right motor. Guys, thanks for your help, can anyone recommend a good resource book for numbers or a website so I can get some more knowledge. I have the Corvette books (that's how I got the tranny and wheel numbers) but it was of zero help with everything else. All suggestions appreciated. Thank you very very much.

A good source for info is: Chevrolet by the numbers. 1965-69 by Alan L. Colvin.
There are others by him for various years. The VIN tag should be on the dash, seen through the windshield, drivers side. |
