Same problem here on my 69 Z/28 I just finished. The starter looked and checked out fine but after further investagation the guts were not hi tourqe that a z should have. We rebuilt it using the correct guts and its fine now, cold or hot.

I had the same problem once and it ended up being the battery. Not enough amps to turn over a fresh (very good compression) engine when hot.
