I'm sure the paint thickness varied, but if you think about it, the bare manifolds were bolted on the bare iron block. To paint the lower part of the block, the manifolds had to be painted. Factory photos show the burned off paint on the lower part of the manifolds. The reason survivors show remains of paint on the ears only is obviously because they remained cool enough to burn off.
I looked at one of mine the other day and there is no peeling or flaking where the orange has burned off - just a darker shade of cast iron grey. I think they're pretty accurate.....
