That last tach picture looks like a 4500 yellow line, and a 5000 redline. If it is for a small block Nova, then that would be correct, right?

The yellow/orange shading starts 500 rpm's below the redline on all 3 tachs...kind of hard to see..but that's the way it works....

besides, who cares about redlines anyway...???

Wilma, redline tires are nice!! I read an old article from 1970 that talks about the L34 and L78 cars.. They stated the redline for the L78 was 5800 rpms.. Hey I guess it is all in the way you interpret it.. There is no doubt these engines can handle more rpms than advertised!! I just thought maybe the pictures would clarify things a bit...

Rich......

What you might be referring to is the horsepower and torque specs for this engine....68-70 L78's were advertised at 375hp at 5600 rpm's..torque was 415lbs at 3600 rpm's...these numbers are a little conservative for what the engines actually produced...when this motor was introduced in 1965 it was rated at 425hp...but at a higher rpm(around 6300 I think) the rating was dropped in 1966 to 375..probably to help with the marketing of the new 427 engine or maybe to keep the insurance companies happy..who really knows..??

Why would chevy lower the redline to 5500 on the L78 for the Nova and every one application it was 6000? I say 6000, I think your reading the tach incorrectly....
