It was an SS454 thing and not exclusive to the LS-6. It is also very common for the Baltimore plant to use the "SS" door marque instead of the "Malibu" on the SS454 cars but one of the rare exceptions.

[/ QUOTE ] Hi Rick: What has your experience been with the Canadian 454's.I have never seen an original 454 up here without the ss door emblems.I actually have the original panels off my ls5 and she has them as well as a friends original ls6 that he purchased in 1972. |

Rick, was this car at chevelleabration in 2003? We looked at it along with cumby wondering why it had such an early trim tag and the owner swore up and down the guy he purchased it from assured him it was a real ls6 |

" A fool and his money..." If someone was willing to shell out that much for a fake LS6 before doing any research, then that person deserves it. I can only feel sorry for him when he is at a cruise night and he says "Yeah its a real LS6 car" to someone who actually knows that it is a fake. I really dont feel sorry for them.

I vaguely recall that car. As for the SS/Malibu door panel emblem, I've also seen them the other way. A local guy bought a '70 Malibu from his Grandmother, the original owner. The car had never been apart until he decided to do some upgrades. The car had bench interior and SS panels on both doors. When he pulled it apart, it had a Baltimore build sheet stuck to the inside of the driver's door panel. Matching VIN..........! Remember guys,..... "Always and Never!"

Festus is right. It was an early assembly computing error. Technically,in order to get the new 1970 454 Chevelle/Elcamino,you first had to order the Z-25 396 package, then the Z-15 454 package was added to it. The B-22 "SS" Door emblems were automatically included with the Z-25 package, and should have been carried over to the 454 option, but it wasn't so in the beginning. Early in production, all the other Super Sport provisionals followed along with the Chevelle/Elcamino 454,except the door panel callout, from what I have seen. All 6 United States Chevelle Assembly Plants amended this by adding them to the door panels at the trim shop later on,and even to some NON SS cars..even though their paperwork didn't call this out.Chevrolet released a TSB alerting them to do this also. Canada's Oshawa plant was on the ball and carried over the B-22 addition from the get go on their LS-5's paperwork.(No LS-6's were produced at Oshawa) It should be noted that in my research that I have only seen two against the norm documented Baltimore Built LS-6's with the B-22 callout on their buildsheets. Both were later production, and both built before and after other cars without them. Ironically the 1970 Monte Carlo 454 Z-20 Super Sport option reflected the B-22 "SS" door emblem at the very same plants the Chevelle 454 Super Sports were assembled without them. Beginning in 1971 & 72,ALL Super Sports,be it 454,402 or 350 cid's had their orders corrected to reflect B-22 "SS" door emblems. |

Hey Rick this should probally be spun to a seperate thread. I have seen many an L-78 with SS396 door panel emblems, I own one that has had them since day one. My LS-6 was built at Atlanta late April with a 791 interior, it had Malibu emblems. The first thing I did after buying the car from the Original owner was to go to the Chevy dealer and order SS emblems ( May 1977)and install them only to discover the build sheet attached to the right panel. I know there is a lot of discussion as to when and where they were installed. Jim |
