If the car has the a.i.r. system in it... sounds like the pump and the diverter valve need to be restored. My old '69 Z popped and crackled. Once we sent the smog unit out to Jerry MacNeish, 95% of the popping, crackling went away.

Can i just disconnect the a.i.r. to eliminate that from the crackle causer possibilities?
