1987 IROC Z/28: Last of the Norwood Camaros

1987 Camaro IROC Z/28. Shipped August 19, 1987, one of the last Camaros to be built out of the Norwood Ohio F-Body plant before it close down forever. Very rare combination of options. Last year for Yellow paint option in a 3rd gen Camaro. First year of L98 Tuned Port Injection engine.

Total Camaro Production in '87: 137,760, of that number only 3,052 Camaros of all model types were ordered in Code 52 Yellow.

There were 52,863 Z/28s built, of those 52,863, only 12,105 were built with the L98 350 Tuned Port Injection Corvette based engine.

I am not one for extrapolating numbers without the statistical data to back it up but if you consider that only abut 2.5% of 1987 Camaros (base models, LT, Z/28, IROC), were Yellow, then if you guestimate that 2.5% of IROCs were yellow, the final number may be around 300 Yellow IROCs built. I haven't seen another yellow 87 L98 IROC in my travels.

Three owner, locally owned car. Never abused. Has 121,000 miles but easily passes for 21,000. Original, "born-with" engine, automatic transmission (no manual trans was available with this engine option), heavy duty 9-bolt rear end, etc. Original glass T-Tops (non-leaking!), optional 4-wheel discs, optional 3.27 ratio BW rear dif, pw, pdb, AC, AM/FM cassette stereo.

When I bought it, it still had the original spark plugs and wires in it. I gave it a tune up, new belts, flushed all the fluids, etc., using only AC/Delco parts. New brake pads, and the original rotors were resurfaced. New front carpeting and headliner, the rest of the interior is the original grey custom cloth optional interior and has not been touched (only cleaned). I kept all the old parts I took off the car including the old carpet and headliner.

Mostly original paint and sheet metal. I had one dent fixed in the quarter and a hokey rear wing removed that was installed in 1987 by the first owner. The paint was matched perfectly to the rest of the body. No rust, ever. (Both front and rear urethane bumpers are slightly off color but that happens to all of them with age.) The car has some rock chips here and there but I have refrained from repainting it because it looks so nice as is. And these cars are only original once. It has lasted 20 years with this paint, and it could last another 20 and still be presentable.

I have the factory invoice microfiche copy as well as the GM of Canada docs on the car.

I know I use the term "original" a lot, but that term really describes this car. She runs beautifully and is quicker and faster than I'd ever thought any 80's car could be! She's a joy to drive and at 20 years old she will only be worth more in the future. Think what a 67 Camaro was going for in 1987, after 20 years, and how hard it was to find an original condition example back then. Here's your second chance!

Forgot to mention: New custom-made, dual exhaust system including high-flow catalytic converter. Replicates the original system perfectly -just works a while lot better. Original factory head pipes are still intact. Sounds great and runs strong.

I replaced the windshield due to a large chip.

The transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner about 3 or 4 years ago (I'll have to recheck the paperwork- I have all his receipts). It operates pefectly. Shifts firm and works flawlessly.

Everything else works fine on the car including the a/c which was updated to R134. I also have an extra NOS GM a/c compressor that goes with the car. It was a one-year-only design because of the non-serpentine fan belt pulley it uses and is almost impossible to find if you ever need one. I bought it just in case. A mechanic friend who worked at a GM dealership back in the 80's had it on his shelf and always wondered what the application was!

I wish all sales went this easy. Heck, I should consign it to BJ and get at least $500,000 for it, right??? I see the headlines now: "The IROC Z is the next Hemicuda."

I didn't realise that GM Canada could supply paperwork on a car that was built and sold in the USA. You learn something new everyday.

Were these cars offered in a manual?

You could only get a manual with the 305 motors. The L98 TPI 350 only came with the auto trans due to reliability issues with the manual emanating from the tremendous Yenko-like horsepower of the L98.

L98 350 cars were auto-only. 305's were available with 5sp, but even back then those seemed to be few and far between.

I think it's a new Yenko.net sales record. I posted it at 11:13 PM and sold it to the gentleman who emailed me at 12:50 AM, an hour and 37 minutes later.

Thank you to all who contacted me about the car. The new owner seems quite happy with it and has just left with the car on his trailer.

I think my wife was happier to see the crazy rear wing and the box of old carpet finally go, more than seeing the money she thinks she getting her hands on.
