Try turning it around and using silicone brake fluid...then you don't risk damaging paint or plating...we use it on all the restored cars...

Some semi black spray bomb choices are KRYLON 1613, RUSTOLEUM 7777, etc etc.........
I would think any of the GOOD Rust Inhibiting sprays on Yellow Zinc.........used consistently would help the plating survive........(I am NOT a fan of WD-40, versus BoeShield, Fluid Film, etc)
