Default Re: 1964 Mercury Park Lane SOHC Convertible?????

[ QUOTE ]
was that engine used in NASCAR? where there any 64 mercurys raced in that year? not park lane conv. but any others?

[/ QUOTE ]

The SOHC was developed by Ford to combat the Chrysler Hemi on NASCAR tracks. NASCAR vetoed the SOHC and I think that decision led to the temporary ban of the Hemi as well. (The Hemi ban sent Richard Petty into drag racing for a short time before the ban was lifted.)

"Fastback" '63 and '64 Ford Galaxies and Merc Marauders raced in NASCAR and the fastback roofline was designed specifically for NASCAR tracks after the boxtop roofline proved too drag-inducing.

Going off the top of my head here so corrections are welcomed.
