Thanks Rick, I'm hoping to learn a lot here. I'm only 18 so I am fairly new to the supercar stuff, but I have been working on SS427 Impalas all my life. I used to go by the Motion shop every sunday on the way to church so I guess that was when I started getting really interested in Motion. I have already learned a lot of interesting things about Motion on here and I am planning to do a 68 Biscayne "Street Sacers Special" recreation once I can find a nice body. It'll look just like the on in the 4/68 Hi-Perf Cars article. Great Site!

Tarrytown was where they built all fullsize Chevrolet up until they closed in several years ago. The plant was located a few miles north of the city along the Hudson I think it was one of the first if not the first plant to manufacture Chevrolets. We have a few 68 SS427 Impalas that were built at Tarrytown and sold on Long Island, one in Baldwin and the other in Riverhead.

Welcome to the site Steve. Just for the record, The Tarrytown, NY plant was Chevrolet's first assembly plant, opening for the 1912 model. Before that, the facility manufactured the Maxwell car. It closed just a couple years ago.

welcome steve, I thought I detected some Long Island in your accent. I see you posted a pic of your ride in the BaldwinMotion photo gallery, it is quite the cruiser, what can you tell us about that car?

That car is actually my dads. It has been in the family since 1978. He saw it in a Newsday ad and bought it from a kid in Seaford for $700! The car was a basketcase with bald tires and typical LI rust. The interesting thing was that it had a 68 Vette tri-power engine in it and the original 427 was upside down in a puddle of oil in the trunk, along with all the comfortron air parts. The trans and rear were original and he drove the car everyday until 1982. The kid he got it from said he bought it from a dentist, and he also said that the car was supposedly sold at Baldwin. The big mystery with this car is the hidden headlights, as everybody says they were only available on Caprice. Besides this car, we also saw one other Tarrytown 68 SS427, a custom coupe, in a PA junkyard, and that car had the hideaway setup. This car was also clearly untouched, and the junkyard owner said he got the car in 1973. I wonder if the paperwork for our car is still out there somewhere Anyways, the restoration was completed in 1995, and the car currently has just over 60000 miles on it. It is a great car and a blast to drive! I will get some additional pics posted. Also, if anybody on here has any 64 through 70 fullsize Chevies, my brother and I have a cowltag/vin number database. We get info from car tags, and also junkyard buildsheets and protecto plates from ebay, and we are up to about 6000 cars. We have learned alot about option codes and engine build dates in relation to body build dates, and the meanings of other misc codes on the cowl tags from doing this research. So if anybody has a car from these years, any info you could contribute would be greatly appreciated!
