Don't know if it would have made a difference given the venom on the spike but the first thing they teach you in trauma medicine is NEVER pull the knife, fork, steel rebar, etc., out of a wound. While it's still in there, it's plugging the hole and limiting the blood loss.

However, when you look down and see a 6"-8" spike sticking out of your chest, your first reaction would be to just pull it out. I know that would be my first reaction.
