I am watching this with hopes as well Marlin. I too have a camera that makes this claim and no matter what I do, it will not focus when close. Standing further away and zooming also does not help.
Mine is a Sony Mavica. Archaic yes but it was great when the first memory card cameras came out because I could download into anyones computer whereas the others could not if the software was not present. Still works good however. Rick

Attempting to take these types of pix the camera has to be held verrrrry still. Try the macro setting using your camera's timer (most have this feature) and a tri pod. If no tri pod, start stacking stuff till you get the camera where you want it.
Good luck!

holding still is one of the keys, find a rest to land your arm on and also the advice of staying back about a foot then zooming in works well, hold your button part way down let the camera focus and push the rest of the way once it looks good, also I have found if I am slightly off left or right of the thing when I hit the button it seams to be less sensative to the flash but still light up what I was after in the pic.

All good suggestions...the timer trick I learned from one of the photogs from Chevy High Performance magazine...works well for night shots if you don't have a tripod

I have two Sony Mavicas with floppy slots and the flower setting. I can take pictures of Holley carb numbers an inch away. You have to push the button half the way down and let the camera refocus before you snap the picture. Here's a picture of a quarter from 1/2 inch away.
