If the car had Z stripes that's normal,so there isnt another color showing through the grilles of the cowl panel in the middle of the stripes, which is also why you found orange in this area on a pace car...but without stripes I've never seen one that wasn't body color.

And the body color was sprayed first, with the firewall paint fogged in to the upper half of the firewall rather than the other way around.

Agreed. I realized that error shortly after typing it but it was too late to delete. Van Nuys masked the cowl before painting the firewall, Norwood didn't.

I agree. All the non-Z stripe cars Ive come across have been body color in the cowl.

Maybe JohnZ will show up here to clarify

The original cars I have looked at have been body color, with the exception of Z's being stripe color. My 69 SS survivor is body color.

The Fisher Body Paint Spec was to black out the plenum area on light-colored cars; Styling didn't want to see the black wiper linkage contrasted against body color below it in that area. However, that was "extra work", and was random at best. My original-paint 02D Norwood '69 Z/28 (Fathom Green, white stripes) has Fathom Green in the plenum and on the cowl, but where it has flaked in a few places you can see that there's stripe white under the green, so mine was "greened-out" over the stripe overspray instead of blacked-out. You're likely to find almost anything, I guess.

Hey John,

Good to see you here. What denotes a light colored car?

Steve
