Default Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)

I asked the "king", and he said early production carbs[usually 1st 2 months of production did not receive the two letter suffix. He also said no 96X 97X 98X 99x 4557s have the GG suffix[90x was about the cutoff on 4557s to receive the GG code]] ,also that it crossed over to other carbs as well...I asked him about the dec 69 without a GG code and he said hes never seen one that late w no GG stamp...Email him direct if you need any more info..Kid

I probably decoded the date wrong. It is 984.

Can someone tell me what the date is? How do you decode holley date codes?

Picture attached.

9 = The last digit of the year, in this case 1969
8 = The month of production, in this case, August
4 = The week of the month, in this case, the 4th week.

When decoding the month, remember that 1-9 is for January through September, "0" is October, "A" is November, and "B" is December.

When decoding the year, you have to account for the decade of production as well. A carb with a 3-digit date code is easy to decode, but starting around 1972 they went to a 4 digit Julian date code system which can confuse matters.

The Julian system uses the first 3 digits to denote the day of the year, and the last digit is again the year of prodduction.

Example: 2503
250 = the 250th day of the year
3 = the year of production, which could be 1973, 1983, 1993, etc.

The August date of my carb is too early for my L-78 with an April build date. I will be looking for a better dated carb. for my restoration.

My L78 is a June build with a Sept dated GG carb.
They are getting expensive...
