Shot from space. No conventional jet can climb to an altitude where the sky turns black and you can see the curvature of the earth. It's just the oblique angle of the space station as it flew from the northwest to the southeast as it passed bye.

Andy,
In no way was I trying to start a debate I was just commenting that the photo looks like it was taken from a much lower altitude. Both the SR-71, U-2 and WB-57 all are capable of flying at 100,000+ feet and at least two can fly to the upper fringes of our atmosphere where it is nearly dark. I have seen both photos and documentary's on both aircraft and I will be damned if I can find just ONE photo on the net taken from either aircraft. I did however find this link Space shuttle photo myth I promise they can take photos that appear much higher than what these photos appear to be taken from. Very neat pictures none the less.

Rick, it's all good. I said no coventional airplane, but the spyplanes and research craft are far from that.
If you like to spend some days looking at really cool pics, try this: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/
I have been an airplane nut since I was just a little kid.
Anything with wings is cool for me.

still cleaning the office out of 20+ years of boxed photos.
I think I am through most of the cars, so here are the ships and planes !!

The USS Independence (CV62) two F14's to the left and probably a CH46 helicopter and a fixed wing P3 to the right.

close-up of the 2 F14's below

I was assigned to intel photography in the Med prior to the Beirut, Lebanon cease-fire being broken in Feb 84, this was shot with a manual Canon F1 and 1000 spd film after sunset from a moving ship.

Chris,

I see single tails on these planes.
F-14's or possibly A-6 Intruders?

Jet on the left, climbing, is an A-6 Intruder or its larger brother, an EA-6 Prowler. Jet on the right, low, looks like an S-3 Viking anti-sub jet.
