Just like cancelling a cashier's or certified check. There is no truly safe way to send and receive money.

I believe the waiting period for the cash back on a postal money order is 30 days. They will not cash it earlier than that in my experience with a lost money order. The only way you could scam someone out of the cash with a money order is if they don't cash it in during the 30 day waiting period.
