Again, it would have to be an SS/RS to get the 396. There were no 67 RS 396 Camaro's built, ever. Remember, an RS was an appearance option, and not a performance option like the SS. The most power you could get in a 67 Sport Coupe or an RS, was the L30, at 275 hp. If that wasn't enough, you would have to step up to the plate and order the L48, L35, L78, (RPO Z27)

My car is a 3L 4N. RS/SS, no big block without SS option. 4P, ss 350 or L30. Charley, are you talking about the pace car? Roger

There's a red-on-red 67 L78 that was on eBay a year or two ago. Original 396/375hp engine, Muncie 4-spd, 4P car with protect-o-plate. That car is now in WA state, belongs to a friend of mine. Actually, he's not much of a friend because he won't sell me the car...

That red on red SS396 was my old car and it was a 4P car also. I think there are 3 known 4P L78's...my old car, Charlie's and Grumpy Jenkin's car.

yep.

I also have seen cars that were worked on by sons for mothers and things were changed a little due to what was available at the time when repairs were made, also have seen cars with very long ownership where stuff was stolen or just pulled from the cars to make them less appealing, basically they loved the car but were tired of buying stuff the kids were stealing off them.

So unless proven otherwise by window or build sheets, any real 396 car is an SS first and no way paperwork could even be generated to stop SS trim from overiding the RS trim on RS cars....so the only way any RS cars could have come through badged as RS would be by result of assembly line mistake or intent? . 1967 is unique being able to decode by cowl tag but isn't 4P for SS350 cars? ~ Pete

I've read that 4P was used for L30/M20 cars, SS350 cars, early Z28's, and early SS396/375 cars.

Wasn't Charley's pace car originally an L-78 four-speed car, converted by Chevrolet to an L35 auto car for pacing and parade purposes?
