Of course...I went to camaros.org and found this...
[ QUOTE ] L35 396ci/325HP V8 4BC - SS only, Q-Jet L34 396ci/350HP V8 4BC - SS only, Q-Jet L78 396ci/375HP V8 4BC - SS only, Holley L78/L89 396ci/375HP V8 4BC - SS only, Holley, Al head [/ QUOTE ] I knew of the white car above starting in 1980...and like I said...a middle aged lady drove it. It was an original black plate car...so I assume that she had it since new... ![]() So Camaros.org is saying you couldn't get a RS396...Hmmm ![]()

I owned an original SS 396 1967 convertible, and found all research I read indicated the RS option trim on a 396 car would be superceded by the SS option. But you never know, the trim holes line up, and they could have been missed on the assembly line, or changed later. The steering wheel cap is easily removed. The SS car also had a different gas cap, made from aluminum, with the SS(396) or SS350 designation.
There were a bit over 5000 396 cars built in 1967, and many of them were SS/RS cars, the RS trim was just not needed, because the option was so obvious-hide away headlights, lower valance turn signals, lower valance back-up lights. Many people have been mistaken that the "SS" option included the hide-aways, but this is not true. Probably because the "RS" trim was not on the combination SS/RS cars. |

Ken...that's what gets me...why would a middle aged lady (45-ish then) change out all the emblems on her Camaro? Oh well, I guess weirder things have happened, huh?
![]() It was her daily driver...six days a week. I drove by that car every day to go to work. ![]()

[/ QUOTE ] Bruce, she might have wrecked the car (daily driver!) and the new panels were from another RS that wasn't an SS. My guess is that she rear-ended someone and the repair shop put a replacement RS front end on and her old 396 Turbo Jet emblems. Stranger things have happened, as the saying goes. |

[/ QUOTE ] Jeff, do you have cowl tag info? . Trim aside, doesn't a real '67 396 include either 4K(L78) or 4N(L35) on the tag? ~ Pete

Again, it would have to be an SS/RS to get the 396. There were no 67 RS 396 Camaro's built, ever. Remember, an RS was an appearance option, and not a performance option like the SS. The most power you could get in a 67 Sport Coupe or an RS, was the L30, at 275 hp. If that wasn't enough, you would have to step up to the plate and order the L48, L35, L78, (RPO Z27)

My car is a 3L 4N. RS/SS, no big block without SS option. 4P, ss 350 or L30. Charley, are you talking about the pace car? Roger

So unless proven otherwise by window or build sheets, any real 396 car is an SS first and no way paperwork could even be generated to stop SS trim from overiding the RS trim on RS cars....so the only way any RS cars could have come through badged as RS would be by result of assembly line mistake or intent? . 1967 is unique being able to decode by cowl tag but isn't 4P for SS350 cars? ~ Pete
