I think you hit the nail on the head. The top plate and snap ring is missing. No wonder I couldn't complete that step.
Thanks for all the input!

That top plate is what locks the steering wheel when you turn the key off...

I've found it's sometimes a good idea to disconnect the horn whenever you're working in this area. . When dicking around w/ the re & re of the related parts, it's hard not to make horn ground contact a few times and the resulting honking also zap spots on the contact surfaces can be avoided. ~ Pete

Well I found what the deal was. I need a Camaro part so I stopped out by Ron in McHenry looked at another steering column.
What I realized is that I had taken the plate and spring out earlier. There was no snap ring holding the plate and spring. Someone had put things back together without using the snap ring. So now where do I get a snap ring to go back on the column?

You're talking about a very common inexpensive part, used from 1967 all the way up to today on nearly every single GM vehicle.
Contact any GM Parts dealer.Ask for part #5694191..later superseded by #580074.Either one will work. It's a small wire C-Clip that a Hardware store most likely would have as well. I think it costs all of 15 cents. |
