Note the A-Y and the AU. This means two different manufacturers made the hoses.

Well, shall we add a little more confusion into the mix? Thanks to member Keith Tedford for sending me some pictures.
![]() The picture on the left is a 69 COPO and was taken the day the owner brought it home new. It appears there is a stripe on the "driver's" side of this hose. But no indication from what we can see of any lettering or part number. The picture on the right is Keith's COPO and was taken in 1970 or 1971. This one appears to have a stripe on the "passenger's" side of the hose. the picture did not cover the other end of the hose. As has been mentioned, these hoses obviously differed at certain times and probably at different assembly plants due to the suppliers. At this point I'm not sure if I'll do any replicating to my hose, just thought I would add something extra for observation.

The line was there purely to show that the hose was not twisted when installed. Most all hoses have a line of some sort for this reason. The line was applied to the raw rubber hose before it was molded and vulcanized into shape. The line can be anywhere around the hose. GM specs probably specified that the line be visable when viewed standing over the installed part. That leaves plenty of room (about 180 degrees) for the line to apear. Same thing with the part number.
This is just like the assembly line codes molded into tires. The code was painted on before the raw rubber was molded. So don't sweat the orientation of the line or the part number. Just get the size and font right and you will be OK. Duplicate an original if you want to be on the safe side. I highly doubt that you will find many hoses with the lettering all in the same place on that many original hoses. Greg R.
