great tag decoding.....ding....ding....ding.....
you got all the info correct, that was not the clue. charley let the cat out of the bag, the tag is oversize....why?
secondly what does the 89 dso stand for?
lets go to step 2, explain this apron stamping:

89 DSO Stands for Ford Transportation. Was the extra space on the tag used to place a certification sticker or tag similar to SCCA racing?

Hey maybe it was a prototype ! Either that or the extra space was there in case someone wanted to write "Charley Sucks" on the tag.

Not that I know(or care to know)anything about "Furds"but does that serial number tag have enough digits for 1968.GM cars always had 13, you only have 11.Is that normal or did ford keep their serial# short as to not confuse their owners.

pete, good catch on the F and R

dajudge, the 89 dso is the key

12 bolt, bingo on the star

ssteve, get back in your shop and get that firebird done, I need Frank on the LS6, Stuart is waiting patiently.

Here is the buck tag, you will notice an S on this one where the F and R are on the others. The F 302 is on the apron, the S 390 is on the buck and the R 428 is on the door tag.

Keep the guesses coming guys.

"NOT FOR TITLE OR REGISTRATION"

Is that unusual to state this in regard to the VIN on this plate?
