I have used RIT dye (available at most grocery stores) many times on sunfaded door panel carpet and floor carpet as well.
Clean it very good and then get out in the sun and use a soft bristled brush to work the dye solution into the carpet. (A long round brush like you use in a degreaser tank works great.) Let it dry and it is a permanent lasting dye.
We dyed the original sun bleached carpet and door panel carpet on the Judge Conv that I painted. If you follow the link below you can see some pics of the finished product.
