The best way to tell if it's a true COPO 9796 is if you can get the build sheet. If this isn't possible (b/c not all cars came w/ build sheets) you need to check the mounting holes to the rear spoiler to see if its perfectly punched out, (anyone w/ a drill can install a spoiler). Also, I would speak with the original owner, if possible, find out if they special ordered the spoiler. Learn as much as you can because there are many that have different opinions on the exact dates. As for value the car is worth as much as the buyer is willing to pay .

You are right! GM drilled the holes to a specification assigned by a print. There was an early print and a later print. The tooling was also revised so the part numbers for the spoiler will show revision # on them.
The best documentation is the original owner ![]() https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/show.../page/2#138884 Phil |

I dont believe that tall spoiler cars are worth more. Everyone that I know likes the short spoiler cars better anyway.

Ouch.... That Hurt.. You should know last year I turned down 6 figures for mine so I guess you could be wrong for at least one car- unless other 70 standard D-80 cars are getting real offers over $100K these days....
You got an opinion I guess, but I can tell you for fact I would not intrude into a thread on GTO's - Just to add profound negitivity to the thread. That is my opinion, and like you I am entitled to it. ![]() Phil |

Phil, when you say (the part numbers for the spoiler will show revision #'s on them )what are the differances on these numbers & what do they look like ? as for values like i said it depends how much someone is willing to pay. i paid 60,000 & have been offered 80,000 from someone obviously crazier than i.

Phil, when you say (the part numbers for the spoiler will show revision #'s on them )what are the differances on these numbers & what do they look like ? [/ QUOTE ] It is the same number on the end caps marked left and right the part number is followed by a REV #. This is how AO Smith designated the early tooling and marked the production changes to the cap molds. End cap Fitment on the quarters was a big problem which postponed and greatly limited the number of cars built in 70. Phil ![]() |

"Just to add profound negitivity to the thread."
I didn't think he was adding negativity to the thread at all. If you read the very first post the question was asked "are the COPO Z's any more valuable than the standard Z?" I can see you being offered that kind of money for your car but I believe the amount is based more on the condition of your car rather than the spoiler. |

Thanks Charlie,
That follow up to my post was perhaps a little easy for me to take out of context in the heat of the moment. Thank God for Moderators.... Oh yea ![]() ![]() Phil |
