I deal with UPS on these matters continually. If you did not insure it, that is the end of any recourse save the minimun coverage offered (I think it's $75 or $100). You will just have to take out your frustrations best possible, and move on.
Although it would be a tough battle; I think you could hang them with the packed by UPS, but the no insurance will void that angle for the several hundred you have now lost.
"Packaged Improperly" has been UPS's excuse forever. VERY hard to get around it in a damage situation.
