Marlin or other Deuce gurus: What determined which 4-speed shifter and mounting setup was used on the Deuces? All of the 4-speed Deuces I saw at SCR-8 used the center hump/GTO bench handle setup, but looking at Alan Ives' incredible blue Deuce, I noticed he has the side-of-the-hump style shifter positioning that came with non-Deuce bench seat manual trans floor shifters. Since Alan is the original owner, there's no doubt that his install is original.
Any known others like this, and what determined the difference? Thanks for the info, BCD. |

Several original owner deuces have different shifters, they just preferred something different. The standard shifter was the '69 camaro SB shifter mechanism with a Pontiac Tempest/GTO bench seat arm #4177.

Marlin,
Owner preferences granted, but Alan says that his came from Colonial like that, and the only hole in the hump is the on-the-side style that was torched open by the factory. Maybe they ran out of the standard setup when they were building his car and had to substitute? Thanks! BCD. |

You guys are right on the mark (as always). My car did come with the Camaro style shift handle and it is clearly stamped on both sides of the handle with the "Hurst" name.
I know it seems like Don used different parts in building our cars but I guess he was just doing what any small businessman does when you have to get something done you use what you have available at the time. So even though our cars all are basically the same, they still have samll individual differences. By the way, I just read the article on Joe Barr and his car. If you are tuned in here Joe, I want to say many kudos to you, your great looking car and the terrific Yenko collection that you have put together. ![]() Alan '70 Deuce |

![]() ![]() The deuces were prepped for the 4177 setup, ie; the hole was punched in the center of the tunnell long b4 the shifter was installed. So, if any came sans 4177, there would be a very, very large hole in the tunnell! We believe that all 4speed deuces came with 4177's. The a/t deuces can be a different story in that it is very possible that one might not have been converted to the floor. There was a story of one a/t deuce that the hurst unit came uninstalled in the trunk. We have learned new info that the particular car may very well have had the shifter installed at Yenko, and maybe the box was tossed in the trunk or something. This particular deuce appears to have been dealer transferred from Peck to Londoff, unusual!
